An experiment in seeing

A study in perspective / 001

The world,
in proportion.

Big on the map.
But how big, really?

Pick two countries. See their true relative size.
A fresh perspective on a familiar planet.
Same scale. Real proportions.

A note on perspectiveHow the scale works

One square kilometre means the same thing on both sides.

Mercator maps enlarge places farther from the equator. Here, each country uses an equal-area projection centered on itself. We calibrate its silhouette to its reported surface area, then apply the same scale to both outlines. A country with twice the area occupies twice the space.

250 places. One shared scale.

The catalogue includes all 249 ISO-listed countries and areas, plus Kosovo: all 193 UN member states, Palestine, Vatican City, and separately listed territories. Small countries keep their true size; a locator helps you find those that are too small to resolve. Coastlines are simplified, with islands kept in their geographic positions. Surface area includes inland water. Distances and shapes are approximate; boundary definitions follow the sources.

Boundaries: Natural Earth, 1:10m (public domain). Areas: UN Demographic Yearbook 2024, with documented fallbacks. Population: World Bank (CC BY 4.0), the UN, and Natural Earth; each estimate shows its year. Missing figures are marked as unavailable. Names, capitals and fallback areas: World countries (ODbL).
